Recessed Lighting Installation Cost Calculator

Recessed lighting installation is estimated at about $196 – $425 per light in new construction or $311 – $735 per light in an existing ceiling. These are estimates based on our cost model, not quotes or national averages. Both assume 6 LED disk lights in one room, a flat ceiling, easy access, Texas’s provisional $90 – $125/hour labor band, one dimmer and one permit allowance. Existing-ceiling work includes small drywall repairs; painting, new circuits and panel work are excluded.

How to choose

Existing ceiling means adding new wired lights through a finished ceiling. New construction assumes open framing.

How to choose

Use flat drywall for a normal flat ceiling. Sloped / high means extra access work; concrete assumes an existing usable space for fixtures and wiring.

How to choose

Easy means the electrician can reach the wiring route from above. Having an attic alone does not establish access. Choose Not sure if unconfirmed.

How to choose

For new wired fixture positions, not a retrofit-module replacement price. LED disk: a slim LED fixture. Trimless: a plastered-in, flush edge with extra finishing. Commercial: a higher material allowance, not automatically more light.

Texas: $90 – $125/hour. Provisional planning band—not verified local rates.

What still needs a contractor quote

  • Texas uses an uncalibrated middle planning band, not a verified local contractor rate.
Assumptions behind your estimate
  • 1 room × 10 lights; identical conditions in every room. Preset counts are budgets, not lighting recommendations.
  • Existing ceiling; base 2.5–4 hours/light × 1 ceiling factor × 1 access factor. These are model assumptions, not measured job times.
  • $90 – $125/hour provisional state planning band; one standard dimmer per room and one permit allowance per project.
  • Small drywall access-hole repairs included. Complete ceiling replacement, structural work and hazardous-material remediation excluded.
  • Painting excluded, including paint touch-ups.
  • Panel upgrade excluded; existing circuit and panel suitability still need checking.
  • Assumes nearby usable wiring routes and a suitable existing circuit. Long cable runs, a new circuit, sales tax and separate travel / emergency charges are excluded. No automatic volume discount.

Replacing a Bulb, Retrofitting a Module, or Installing New Lights?

The object being changed decides what to price. This calculator estimates new wired light positions, with open-framing or finished-ceiling labor assumptions. It has no bulb-only or retrofit-only mode; its per-light total is not a replacement price.

Identify the work before comparing any per-light number. No replacement prices are supplied here.
Work & calculator scopeIncluded work and boundaryTell the contractor
Replace a removable bulbNot modeled

A compatible lamp in an existing, unchanged fixture.

No new light position, housing, wiring or ceiling repair is assumed. A trim or integrated LED module is not a removable bulb.

Identify the fixture, permitted lamp type and wattage, quantity, ceiling height and access; ask whether installation labor is included.
Fit a compatible LED retrofit moduleNot modeled

An approved LED module / trim in an identified existing housing, following that kit’s compatibility instructions.

This is not the calculator’s new-position labor allowance. Unidentified housings, damaged wiring, incompatible parts or housing removal change the scope.

Supply housing and module part numbers, location / insulation requirements, dimmer and access details. Separate module replacement from housing or wiring work.
Add new wired fixture positionsThis calculator’s base scope

Selected fixture material, standard nearby wiring / connectors, installation labor, a standard dimmer per room and one permit allowance; remodel patch repairs as stated below.

Open framing and an existing finished ceiling use different labor assumptions. Long runs, new circuits and structural work remain outside the model; paint and panel allowances are optional.

State the count, construction stage, cavity and wiring access, ceiling finish, circuit condition and exact fixture. If replacing whole housings, obtain a separate demolition / repair scope rather than treating it as a simple swap.

For a product-specific distinction, HALO’s LT56 record describes a module for compatible existing housings; it is not the same scope as placing and wiring a new direct-mount fixture. Compare the replaceable parts and access paths before asking for a quote.

Keep the evidence types separate: the calculator’s rates and hours are model allowances; provider-published prices elsewhere on this page are outside examples; a rate you enter is your own input. None verifies compatibility or the work required in your ceiling. Compare quotes for matching work.

What This Estimate Includes

The base estimate assumes new wired LED fixtures on a suitable existing circuit—not just replacement LED inserts. The result above updates the inclusions when you change an input.

Included in the base

  • Selected fixture allowance, integral LED light source, compatible junction boxes, standard wiring and connectors.
  • Electrical labor starts at 1.5–2 hours per light with open framing or 2.5–4 in an existing ceiling, adjusted for your ceiling and access choices. Add 0.5–1 electrician-hour and one standard dimmer per room, using the provisional state hourly band or your entered rate.
  • Small access-hole repairs for a remodel; plaster finishing allowance for trimless fixtures.
  • One project permit allowance of $75–$250, subject to local requirements.

Excluded unless selected

  • Paint touch-ups or whole-ceiling paint; selected painting appears as a separate line.
  • A panel replacement allowance; selecting “Not sure” includes a conditional high-end allowance.

Outside this model

  • New circuits, long cable runs, smart controls, utility service upgrades, sales tax and separate travel fees.
  • Structural concrete work, ceiling reconstruction, hazardous materials, ordinary new-build drywall, wall paint and specialist access equipment.

Cost Per Light: New Construction vs Remodel

Same scope, different access: these examples come from the calculator, not a second price list. Each uses six LED disk lights in one room, Texas’s provisional $90–$125/hour band, one dimmer and one permit allowance. Painting and panel work are excluded.

New construction means open framing. Retrofit / old-work installation here means adding new wired positions through an existing finished ceiling, not swapping a bulb or fitting an LED insert in an existing can. These are planning ranges for typical project scenarios, not national average prices.

Can (housing + trim) vs canless / wafer cost

For a basic canless / wafer-style fixture, the calculator’s closest tier is LED disk: $20 – $60 per fixture, before wiring and labor. A can-style assembly needs its compatible housing, trim and LED module or lamp priced together. The model has no separate can tier, so it does not establish that one construction is always cheaper.

Per light in the same six-light project · USD · housing column needs an actual complete-assembly price
InstallationCanless / wafer proxy
LED disk total

Non-fixture subtotal
New construction $196 – $425 $176 – $365
+ assembly quote
Existing ceiling $311 – $735 $291 – $675
+ assembly quote

The housing column subtracts only the $20 – $60 fixture allowance from the same model; it retains labor, wiring, one shared dimmer, a permit allowance and remodel patching. Add the actual housing + trim + light-source price per position and have the electrician revise installation hours for that assembly. It is a like-for-like budgeting baseline, not a quoted can-light total. There is no automatic canless labor discount. Check the can vs canless assembly and access differences before comparing bids.

Cost to install recessed lighting in an existing ceiling

For a finished lower-level room, review basement ceiling access and obstruction planning before choosing the installation scope.

A remodel adds work around the finish: cutting light and access openings, routing past framing or services, and repairing access holes. This model starts at 2.5–4 electrician-hours per light instead of 1.5–2 for open framing. That is about 67–100% more light-installation labor, not a fixed percentage increase in the whole project. Existing usable wiring or a large efficient multi-light job may cost less.

Concrete is not just a more expensive drywall job. The concrete setting assumes a usable service void; it does not price structural cutting or establish that recessed lights are feasible.

Installation Cost Examples by Room

First calculate the lights, then price that count. These independent one-room examples use the site’s existing Auto layouts with 850 lm / 10 W / 90° fixtures, UF 0.55, LLF 0.8 and spacing ratio 1.5. They are general-lighting estimates, not counts for every kitchen, living room or bedroom.

Bedroom · 12 × 12 ft 4 lights · 100 lux target · 8 ft ceiling · floor workplane Open this layout in the calculator $840 – $1,855$1,300 – $3,095

Each total includes fixture and wiring allowances, installation labor, one dimmer and one permit allowance; the remodel adds small drywall access-hole repairs. Painting, new circuits, panel work and separate task lights are excluded. Do not add these independent totals to estimate one combined job: a multi-room project shares the model’s single permit allowance, and rooms with different conditions need separate scopes.

Reproduce an estimate: open a linked layout and select Estimate cost beside its results to carry the light count into this page. Set one room, the construction stage and the cost assumptions above; other saved budget choices may remain in this tab. The cost tier does not verify the chosen fixture’s lumens or fit. For a kitchen with an island or a bedroom with bedside lights, coordinate those separate layers before budgeting.

9 Factors Affecting Recessed Lighting Installation Cost

  1. Number of lights and rooms

Every light adds fixture and installation cost. Each room gets a standard dimmer and its installation time; the permit and selected panel allowance apply once per project. Use the same conditions for every room, or estimate different rooms separately.

  2. Ceiling material and height

Flat drywall is the baseline. High / sloped ceilings use a 1.35–1.6 labor factor; concrete / service-void work uses 1.8–2.4. These are planning factors, not an assessment that a concrete ceiling can accept recessed fixtures.

  3. Attic and wiring access

An accessible attic above the room can make cable routing easier; a finished floor above often means fishing wires through the ceiling or opening access holes. An attic alone does not prove the route is reachable. Restricted access uses a 1.25–1.5 labor factor for a finished ceiling, or 1.1–1.2 for new construction with a difficult overhead wiring route. “Not sure” spans the easy and restricted scenarios rather than guessing access.

  4. Fixture tier and finish

LED disk, trimless and commercial-grade allowances change the material line. Trimless adds plaster finishing separately. A higher price tier does not automatically mean more light; verify lumens, ratings and dimmer compatibility for the actual product.

  5. Local hourly rates

The state selector assigns a provisional $75–$150/hour planning band. Cities and contractors within the same state vary; these assignments are not a rate survey. Enter a contractor’s hourly range when you have one.

  6. Wiring distance and ceiling finish

The base assumes nearby usable wiring and a suitable existing circuit. Long runs, concealed obstructions and new circuits need separate pricing. Patch repair, paint touch-ups and whole-ceiling painting are distinct scopes.

  7. Dimming and smart controls

One standard compatible dimmer per room is included. Its hardware is in the switch line, and its installation hours are in labor. Smart controls, extra zones and new circuits are excluded, so request separate quote lines.

  8. Permits and inspection

One $75–$250 project allowance is included, not a fee per light or an official local price. Ask who obtains the permit, schedules inspections and pays for any additional visits or corrections. Confirm the actual requirements and fees with your local building department.

  9. Panel capacity

“No upgrade” is a budget assumption, not a capacity check. “Include upgrade” adds $1,500–$4,000 once. “Not sure” separates the lighting subtotal from the possible panel work and shows both scenarios. The combined scenario range includes $0–$4,000 once. This allowance excludes utility service changes and may be exceeded.

Electrician Labor Rates by State

Provisional budgeting bands, not surveyed state rates. We have not collected comparable contractor quotes across all 50 states. State assignments below are editorial starting assumptions; they are not derived from employee wages, and no band is a ceiling on a local contractor’s price. Use “Have a local hourly quote?” to replace them.

Even within Texas, Epic Electrical publishes $100–$150/hour for North Richland Hills, while Fix It Central Texas lists $85–$125/hour around Temple. These provider-published examples show local variation; they do not validate a statewide band or substitute for your quote.

Full calculation method and allowance register

Low and high scenarios are calculated separately. Installation labor = light count × base hours/light × ceiling factor × access factor × hourly rate. Add 0.5–1 switch electrician-hour per room at that same rate. Sum the four base lines plus selected painting and panel work. Round each line outward to dollars, then add; divide that total by the light count for the per-light figure.

If panel need is unknown, the prominent lighting subtotal and its per-light figure exclude panel work. Separate scenarios show totals with and without an upgrade; the full combined range remains visible. Unknown wiring access is also shown as easy and restricted scenarios. These alternatives are not additional charges to add together.

Model-owned allowances: wiring / connectors $15–$35 per light; remodel patching $25–$60 per light; trimless finishing $35–$75 per light; standard dimmer hardware $40–$100 per room; permit $75–$250 per project; localized paint $15–$30 per light or whole-ceiling paint $1–$2 per ft²; panel replacement $1,500–$4,000 once. These are editable budgeting assumptions, not fees published by an authority or a promise of availability.

Ceiling factors: flat 1; high / sloped 1.35–1.6; concrete with usable service void 1.8–2.4. Restricted-access factors: remodel 1.25–1.5; new build 1.1–1.2. Unknown access spans 1 to the restricted upper factor. Unknown panel need spans $0–$4,000. Uncertainty ranges describe scenarios, not statistical confidence.

How to Compare Contractor Quotes

To get a lighting installation cost estimate, start with your room layout and fixture count, enter the actual ceiling and access conditions above, and replace the provisional hourly band with a local quote if available. Use Copy quote request or Print budget to share the itemized scope. A contractor’s site assessment can resolve wiring routes, circuit capacity and finish work that a calculator does not inspect.

Send each contractor the same light count and scope. Ask these six questions before comparing the bottom line.

  1. Are the exact fixtures included?

Ask for model, quantity, light output, finish, location rating and compatible driver / dimmer—not just “LED lights.”

  2. Who repairs and paints the ceiling?

Separate access-hole repair, trimless plaster finishing, local paint touch-ups and whole-ceiling painting. Check texture and color matching.

  3. Who handles permits and inspection?

Identify the applicant, applicable fees, inspection visits and responsibility for correcting rejected work.

  4. Can the existing circuit and panel support it?

Ask whether a new circuit, long cable run, protection changes or panel / service work is included or separately priced.

  5. What warranty is included?

Distinguish the fixture manufacturer’s warranty from workmanship coverage, labor to replace a failed unit and exclusions.

  6. Is this per light or a fixed project price?

Confirm quantity, electrician-hours versus crew hours, taxes, travel fees, cleanup, change-order rates and every exclusion. Compare matching scopes, not just totals.

Check your local building department’s current rules. For example, Seattle’s permit portal lists electrical permits for installed, altered or extended electrical work; that is a local example, not a rule for every US address.

Annual kWh saved = (old W − LED W) × fixtures × hours/day × 365 ÷ 1,000. Annual dollars saved = kWh saved × $/kWh. Payback in months = (LED cost each × fixtures) ÷ annual dollars saved × 12; payback uses unrounded savings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to install recessed lighting per light?

For this model’s six-light Texas example, new construction is $196 – $425 per light and an existing ceiling is $311 – $735 per light. Both assume LED disk fixtures, easy access, one dimmer and a permit allowance; the remodel includes small drywall repairs. Neither includes painting or a panel upgrade. These are calculated scenarios, not surveyed prices. Change the inputs above for your scope.

Estimate your installation
How much does it cost to install 4 recessed lights?

For four LED disk lights in one existing flat-drywall ceiling with easy access, the modeled total is $1,142 – $2,670 in the lower hourly band, $1,300 – $3,095 in the middle band, or $1,510 – $3,520 in the higher band. These totals include one dimmer, small access-hole repairs and a permit allowance, but no painting or panel upgrade. The preset changes only the quantity; your other choices stay in place.

Apply four-light quantity
Is it more expensive to install recessed lighting in an existing ceiling?

Usually, because the electrician works around a finished ceiling, fishes wiring past obstructions and may need access holes that require repair. This model uses 2.5–4 electrician-hours per light for a remodel versus 1.5–2 for open framing, before access and ceiling adjustments. Those assumptions are about 67–100% higher for light-installation labor alone, not a universal premium on the entire job. A fixed 25–50% or 60% total-price claim would not describe every scope.

Compare identical scopes
Does the price include drywall repair and painting?

This calculator includes an allowance for small drywall access-hole repairs in a remodel, but excludes paint by default. Choose paint touch-ups or whole-ceiling painting to add a separate line. Whole-ceiling painting uses the ceiling area you enter and replaces the touch-up allowance. New construction excludes ordinary drywall installation; trimless fixtures add a specific finishing allowance. A contractor’s quote may use different inclusions—ask for them in writing.

Check inclusions and exclusions
Do I need an electrician or a permit?

Have a qualified electrician assess new wiring, fixture compatibility, circuit capacity and panel requirements. Permit and licensing rules depend on the local authority and the work involved; ask your city or county building department before work starts. The calculator’s permit amount is a budget allowance, not an official fee or a determination that a permit is required.

Questions for your contractor
How much does recessed lighting installation cost?

A typical six-light planning scenario in this calculator totals $1,180 – $2,545 for new construction or $1,870 – $4,405 for an existing ceiling. These are model-derived US budget ranges, not surveyed local prices. Both use one room, flat ceilings, easy wiring access, LED disk fixtures and Texas’s provisional $90–$125 hourly band, with one dimmer and a permit allowance. The remodel includes small drywall repairs; painting, new circuits and panel work are excluded. Your light count, access and contractor’s rate change the estimate.
